Dermal fillers are used to treat facial wrinkles and increase the appearance of fullness on the hands. Many different types of fillers are available and each has their own strong points and weak points.
JuvedermTM
The most recent filler FDA approved, JuvedermTM is creating alot of interest. It is similar to Restylane in that it is based on hyaluronic acid. It lasts about as long as Restylane but is slightly more pliable or soft. This makes it a more attractive filler for the lips and under-eye hollows.

Restylane
Restylane is the most popular filler. Restylane is a clear gel of hyaluronic acid, that when injected into the skin adds volume and support to the skin. This can decrease facial lines such as the nasolabial folds (from the nose to the outside corner of the mouth) and marrionette lines (from the corner of the mouth downwards).
Restylane is also used to restore fullness to thin lips, restore volume under the eyes to take away the dark circles.
Treatment
Treatments take 30 minutes and results last upto 6 to 9 months. Nerve blocks are the standard at La Fontaine to help minimize any discomfort. After the treatment normal activities can be resumed immediately, with discomfort being minimal. Side effects include only slight swelling and redness at the injection site, occassionally there is bruising which can be covered with make-up.
Cosmoplast
Cosmoplast is a collagen filler that is used to restore volume. It is softer than Restylane, but does not last as long. Dr. Oleszek likes to use a mixture of Comoplast and Restylane for the ultimate lip enhancement. Cosmoplast is used on the border of the lip to add definition, yet with a softer look. And Restylane is used in the meat or bulk of the lip to add fullness.
Sculptra
Sculptra is another different type of filler. It is generally used as a whole face treatment to restore volume and fullness, as oppossed to Restylane and Cosmoplast that are used for individual lines on the face.
The Future of Dermal Fillers
New fillers are on the horizon, such as Evolence is a longer lasting collagen and is being tested presently for use in the USA.
