HOW WE DIAGNOSE

Swollen Legs

Many diseases can cause swelling of the legs.  We at The Vein & Aesthetic Center of Denver specialize in treatments for superficial venous disease of the leg, which is one of the most common causes of leg swelling. 

Superficial venous insufficiency causes swelling localized to the inside part of the leg, from the groin down to the ankle and foot.  The swelling can be a doughy swelling of soft tissue around enlarged veins or distinct swelling due to the bulging of varicose veins, often resembling grape-like clusters.

Symptoms are often worsened by heat, prolonged standing or even concurrent menstruation.   Other symptoms include dull aching, burning, itching or a heaviness sensation. These may be localized around a specific bulging vein or around the whole leg.  Spider veins and skin color changes may also be seen on the leg, especially on the inside of the ankle.
