There are 2 types of PDO Threads that are used in cosmetic medicine. The smooth PDO threads provide structure and stimulate collagen production in the skin. The smooth threads are used on the face and body mostly to improve texture and fine lines. Common areas are on the cheeks, around the mouth, on the decollette and thighs. Smooth threads are similar to having a filler treatment but will provide more structure than filling. They also have downtime similar to fillers with bruising and swelling up to 1 week.

The barbed PDO threads are used to lift the check, brow, neck and lower face. The barbs on the threads are used to lift the lower skin. We use the brands Mint and Silhouette threads depending on the area treated. These barbed threads can give a dramatic lift that will last over 9 months. Downtime can be more noticeable swelling and downtime for up to 1 week.

Why use PDO threads

The PDO Thread lift provides additional lifting to facial structures, more than can be done with filler alone. So PDO threads can be used by themselves or in conjunction with facial volume restoration with Sculptra to optimize the lifting of loose skin without surgery. As we age we loss facial structure and support and our skin loses its elastic ability.

This creates sagging in the cheeks, the jowls, the neck and brow. And while the surgical facelift and neck lift have been the mainstay of treatment, patients now are looking for non-surgical and less invasive techniques to improve their appearance. The PDO thread lift procedure can offer significant improvement without going under the scalpel.

What Are PDO Threads and How does It Work?

PDO threads are made of polydioxanone suture (surgical stitches) material which have been used safely for years as suture material in surgical wounds. The PDO threads are loaded into hypodermic needles. The needle with the loaded thread is injected under the skin and then when the needle is withdrawn the PDO thread is left in position under the skin. The PDO thread will slowly be absorbed by the body over 4 to 8 months, creating collagen, providing structure to smooth wrinkles and skin texture. If barbed threads are used then a lifting of sagging skin will last about 9 to 12 months.

There are two types of PDO Thread treatments - the smooth and the barbed lifting types:

Smooth PDO threads

With smooth threads, we create structure or a mesh under the skin that will smooth fine lines and skin texture. The mouth, smile lines and crow’s feet are commonly treated. The chest, arms, belly and around the knee are areas treated on the body.

Lifting threads (Mint and Silhouette threads)

Lifting or barbed threads are utilized to produce a more dramatic and lifting results in the face and neck. The Mint threads provide dramatic tightening of the skin with a duration of 9 to 12 months. The brows, the cheeks can be lifted, while the sagging neck skin can be significantly tightened.

We often use the silhouette threads to provide more subtle lifting on the lower face in patients who would benefit from volume restoration. The silhouette threads can give up to 2 years results.
