Waxing is a safe, non-invasive procedure that can remove unwanted hair from virtually any area of the body, including:
Waxing is a semi-permanent solution for excess hair removal, and the results typically last two to eight weeks. The procedure accomplishes this by removing hair at the root, or follicle.
“Home” hair removal methods, such as shaving and the use of depilatory creams, remove the hair at the surface of the skin. Shaving, of course, simply slashes the hair off; depilatory creams dissolve the hair. In both treatments, the follicle is left intact, and regrowth from the follicles can begin again immediately, although the rate of regrowth is different for different people. The other unwanted result is that, particularly with shaving, the hair often grows back as a stiffer stubble.
With waxing—beyond the longer-lasting results—the hair that grows back is often much softer to the touch.
There are two different types of waxing procedures:
Soft wax is applied in a thin coat with a waxing spatula. A thin strip of muslin or paper (thus, the name “strip” wax) is then applied over the wax. When the strip is firmly pressed, it adheres to the wax, and the wax adheres to the skin. The wax is removed by quickly ripping the strip of paper or muslin (similarly to removing a Band-Aid) in the direction opposite to that in which the hair grows. Soft wax is usually used to remove unwanted hair from larger areas of the body, such as arms, legs, and chest.
Because it adheres to the skin and has to be removed in the direction opposite to hair growth, it is more painful than hard wax. Also, it is exfoliating and cannot be reapplied on areas that were just waxed. It may also cause redness or irritation. Soft wax may be applied cold, or it may be heated before application.
Hard wax is also applied directly to the skin but uses no strips. It hardens around the hairs and does not adhere to the skin at all. Also, it does not have to be removed in the direction opposite to the direction of hair growth. Thus, it is less painful and recommended for more sensitive skin. Hard wax is typically used to remove eyebrows and other areas of facial hair.
While we typically think of waxing as something women do, it has been rapidly gaining popularity among men—and why not?
